Artificial Intelligence
Mission
The AI Special Interest Group supports engineers and technical professionals in the practical and responsible adoption of artificial intelligence as it becomes integral to engineering practice.
The SIG builds capability, confidence, and shared understanding through continuing professional development, real world use cases, and cross sector learning. We champion human centred and ethical AI, recognising the relationship between people, process, and technology. Our work aligns emerging AI practice with professional standards, accreditation, and the future needs of the engineering profession.
About
The AI Special Interest Group provides a focused forum for the application of artificial intelligence within measurement, automation, control, and related technical disciplines.
We aim to identify where AI adds value, where it introduces risk. How it reshapes engineering judgement, responsibility, and assurance. Areas of interest include AI enabled measurement systems, intelligent control, data driven automation, digital twins, decision support, safety, and governance.
Supported by the Institute of Measurement and Control, the AI SIG connects activity across technical domains and creates space for informed dialogue at the intersection of engineering, ethics, and emerging technology.
Leadership
The AI SIG is guided by a Steering Committee responsible for its direction, programme, and quality of output.

What We Do
The AI Special Interest Group:
- Curates informed discussion on AI in measurement, automation, and control
- Supports continuing professional development in AI related competencies
- Explores applied use cases and lessons from practice
- Examines technical, ethical, safety, and operational considerations
- Promotes human centred approaches to AI design and deployment
- Identifies emerging trends shaping engineering practice
- Hosts seminars, workshops, training sessions, and conferences
- Produces guidance, papers, and thought leadership
- Encourages collaboration across InstMC technical communities
- Uses digital platforms such as MS Teams to support ongoing engagement
Call for Speakers and Collaborators
The AI Special Interest Group is always seeking speakers and collaborators working with artificial intelligence across engineering and related fields.
We welcome those applying AI within measurement, automation, and control, as well as contributors offering broader or multidisciplinary perspectives, including ethics, assurance, governance, and human factors. We value thoughtful practice, critical insight, and experience grounded in real work.
If you have perspectives, challenges, or lessons to share, we would be pleased to hear from you.

Get Involved
Membership of the AI SIG is open to all current members of InstMC and is free of charge. The only requirement is an interest in artificial intelligence and a willingness to engage in shared learning.
The AI SIG web page provides a point of connection for information and events. A members only MS Teams group supports discussion, collaboration, and shared resources.
