It shouldn't happen to an FSA Assessor part 3, Functional Safety Management Phase 2,  Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) By Ian Pinkney

This presentation is based on my experience as a Technical Authority and Functional Safety Assessor. We are going to look at LOPA;

The subjects that we will cover in this presentation are:

  • Language and Terminology used in Phase 2 of the Safety Lifecycle.
  • Briefly refresh ourselves with the principles of Risk Allocation.
  • Set out the fundamental steps involved in a LOPA study (and the basic maths).
  • Discuss the challenges associated with company risk targets (including TMEL).
  • The relationship between LOPA and other Functional Safety activities.
  • Finally, review the common types of FSA findings that I continue to observe.


There will be a buffet from 17:30 - 18:00. Talk will commence at 18:00.
