Brief Synopsis:

The potential for the formation of an explosive atmosphere is common in many industries and well documented.  This is certainly the case in the water industry based on anaerobic digestion process and associated biogas infrastructure alongside other auxiliary activities using, storing or generating dangerous substances that could potentially form an explosive atmosphere (including flammable liquids in drainage systems).  Due to the recent industry incident, DSEAR is clearly in the spotlight.  RPS have been working in this sector for many years supporting water and wastewater networks from an operational standpoint. 

Our risk division specializing in process safety have been assisting various UK water companies with DSEAR risk assessment, hazardous area classification and codes of practice; therefore, we would like to share some of this experience and learning.
