Project Hydrogen 100 (H100 Fife)

H100 Fife is a key national project to evidence the potential role of hydrogen in the decarbonisation of the UK energy sector. The project aims to deliver a first-of-a-kind 100% hydrogen distribution network, supplying around 300 domestic properties initially. This will be a purpose-built generation and storage solution, supplying a distribution network, comprising of a 7MW offshore wind turbine supplying power to electrolyser units for green hydrogen production. The hydrogen will be stored in above ground 30bar storage tanks and flow through pressure reduction, metering and gas odorisation before reaching the low-pressure polyethylene distribution network. Customers wishing to participate in the will be supplied with hydrogen boilers with options for hydrogen cookers, hobs and fires.

As heat accounts for around one third of the UK’s carbon emissions, the Scottish and UK Governments have committed to set targets for net zero emissions by 2045 and 2050 respectively. Both governments are in the process of assessing the optimal solutions for decarbonising energy and acknowledge the need for clean heat to meet these targets. The demonstration of an end-to- end hydrogen solution for heat, and potential future phases across the whole system is an essential step towards energy system transformation and a key step on the pathway to net zero emissions.
