Synopsis

Petroleum producers apply a wide range of key performance indicators to meet strategic priorities like safety, environmental and social responsibility, and capital expenditures.  Although many of these measures rely on a calculation formula, some operators prefer to use a direct method of measurement or evaluation.  Direct methods and analytic approaches are employed for quantifying energy saving and greenhouse gas emissions and can be supplemented by engineering calculations, statistical analysis, and computer simulation modeling.  Fixed gas cloud imagers, devices that identify a gas species, measure gas concentration, and track the shape and evolution of a gas cloud over time, offer a basis for determining key performance indicators.  Due to their large area of coverage per device and design for continuous unattended operation, these sensors are suitable for the supervision of a specific piece of equipment like a gas compressor or storage tank, a process unit, or in certain instances a whole process plant for several years, proving an extensive source of direct observation.  For energy efficiency and other activities that are operational improvements, one can derive a baseline from the performance measure of the affected equipment without the operational improvement and over time assess progress relative to the baseline.  Results of the effectiveness of fixed gas imaging in monitoring for greenhouse gas emissions are presented.

FUTURE EVENTS

We aim to have a technical presentation on the second Tuesday of each month until June 2021. At the present time we are planning only for webinar events.  If you have a suitable presentation, or feel that there is a subject we should be covering, please contact our Programme Secretary , Henry Downes on Henry.Downes@InstMC.org. As and when conditions allow we will recommence face to face lectures, and reinstigate our social programme. Malcolm GeorgeActing Chairman
