Technical Lecture presented by John Ahern (Instrument Design Engineer - MInstMC)

The "Blunt End" of Measurement & Control

Much attention is paid nowadays to the programmable or "smart" end of instrumentation. But we forget, at our peril, there is also a "Blunt End"!

Thermowells and differential pressure primary elements are still vital parts of process automation.

But what does the engineer need to know about such items to correctly specify them?

The lecture comprises two main parts, the first focusing on the trade-off between protecting the pressure envelope and getting a good response time from the temperature sensor. The second part looks at differential pressure primary elements. Often nowadays thought of as old hat, we will try to show they are still proving a valuable solution in many cases.
