On the 25th of July 2017 the UK government, as part of the clean air plan, has pledged to ban all new petrol and diesel cars (including hybrid vehicles). The decision is aimed to reduce the level of nitrogen oxide which poses a major risk to public health.
However, the car manufacturing industry is heavily reliant on the sale of petrol/diesel cars. At the same time, over the past decades, heavy investments have been made in oil extracting facilities.
It is clear that this ban will impact the industry, environment and people, but we aim to assess the extent of the impact and its consequences.
Our first action will be to convene a Social Media Day on Friday, the 20th of October 2017. During this day individuals and businesses are invited to explain how the ban will affect them using the hashtag #FuelCarsBan.
All the information and viewpoints will be used and deepened by the Engineering Department to publish a assessment of the proposed Bill. The InstMC initiative aims to create a comprehensive report for the public benefit.
If you’d like to join us and be part of the initiative, please log into your Twitter/Facebook accounts and share your comments about how you believe this ban will affect you using #FuelCarsBan.
