Technical and Social events

The London Section Programme of Upcoming Events can be found below.

Evening Technical meetings normally take place at the headquarters of the Energy Industries Council (EIC),

89 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7TP, generally on the second Tuesday evening of each month starting at 6.15pm.
Please note that the EIC offices are within the extended London Congestion Charging Zone, and no parking is available on site. Vauxhall tube and overground is less than 5 minutes walk away. Vauxhall Bus Statioon is also adjacent.

The  Congestion Zone operating time is from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Meetings at the EIC office are scheduled to begin at 6:15 pm, allowing drivers to enter the Congestion Charging Zone after 6:00 pm.

NEXT LECTURE:  13th MARCH:  APPLICATION OF SIL  presented by Rens Wolters – Mokveld 

Once the required SIL for your Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is defined the design of the SIS can start. The different sub-systems, devices, final elements may be selected. The selection should assure that your SIS is in conformity with the requirements of IEC61508 and IEC 61511 and no surprises are found during the validation.

2017- December 14th- Wine Challenge - yet another wonderful evening hosted by Master of Wine Andrew Mulford.

2017 BiteNite 23rd November- was a sellout event. A very convivial evening was had by all. Grateful thanks go to our raffle prize sponsors, and to Rebecca and Alfy for their organisation of the event.

February- Problems in Temperature Measurement.  

January- From Data to Intelligence  presented by Steve Smith, Senior Measurement Engineer at BP. A fast paced discussion on how companies now operating in the global sphere are developing integrated systems to manage "Big Data" and obtain meaningful information to enhance their operations from it. 

November- The Internet of Things- Where do I start by Donal Bourke of Yokogawa. Donal gave a fascinating insight as to where the integration of  all the internet enabled objects might lead us.

October- Capital Change for Projects by Scott Turner of Emerson. Scott discussed the are areas of application for wirelless HART instrumentation, along with the potential capital and operating benefits.

2016/2017  Season  Lecture Reports 

February 2017 - Modern DNA Analysis and it`s Impact on Society. Mr Jim McDonald, Oxford Nanopore Technologies Ltd

Jim introduced the latest technique for DNA seqencing, which potentially brings DNA sequencing into an affordable and immediately techniqe with a myriad of potential uses.  This small look into a future rapidly approaching gave an inkling into the vast changes that are still to come in medical diagnosis.

January- 2017 HIPPS Don't Lie!!  Mr Niels Huttenhuis  -  Yokogawa 

A challenging lecture going through all the aspects of High Integrity (Pressure) Protection Systems, from why and when to use, what to use and how, how to design, install and maintain such systems. There was a lively interchange of ideas throughout the lecture.

Reports from our recent social events can be found below.  Every year we hold the following:-

  • Annual Dinner ( 2017 was our Golden Jubilee Dinner)- a black tie event.
  • Golf Day- combined with Herts Section 
  • Chairman's Bite Nite  - an informal social evening in a pub,
  • Wine Tasting- our pre-Christmas evening exploring the complexities of wine. 
2017 -December- Annual Wine Challenge yet again Andrew Mulford (Master of Wine) attempted to broaden our education in this complex field. Please keep it up Andy!

2017 - November -Chairman's Bite  again held at the Railway Tavern near Liverpool St. A sell out event, a great evening for catching up with old friends, networking and the latest industry gossip. Many thanks to all those Suppliers for their generous donations to the raffle.

2017 - April -50th London Section Annual Dinner

The Event was held in Lancaster London Hotel which was under re-development and will be shortly gain it Royal Charter and therefore will be renamed ‘The Royal Lancaster Hotel’ 

However the re-developments didn’t affect the excellent venue for our 50th Annual Dinner. 

We were grateful to Emerson Process Management as our main event sponsors , Honeywell , Pepperl+Fuchs, Rockwell and Turck Banner for their contributions to the Student and Raffle sponsorship respectively.

Considering the Market conditions the event was well attended with attendance of 250 slightly down on the 2016 figure.

Malcolm George provided an interesting insight and update of the  London Section and the on-going activities .  Martin Belshaw kindly stepped in for our President Sarah Spurgeon. 

Martin has had many years in the Energy sector and is Vice President of the Inst MC . He too gave us a wider presentation of however our great institute is working to provide support to our industry.  

After another excellent meal the floor was left open to our evening was left to our Guest Speaker Dr Peter McDonald who is a consultant gastrointestinal surgeon at Northwick Park & St. Mark's Hospital in London.
He is a past President of the Royal Society of Medicine, Surgery Section and of the St. Mark's Association. His observational and hilarious take on the inner sanctum of the medical world and today's NHS was very well received.


Chairman's Wine Challenge - Thursday 15th December -2016

Another wonderful evening , with Andrew Mulford ( Master of Wine) leading us through the delights to be found in in Aldi, Tesco, Co-op and Majestic. And it wasn't always the more expensive voted the best. An interesting and entertaining evening for 50 members.

Bite Nite 2016

held on Thursday 24th  November 2016 at the Railway Tavern, was a sellout. 120 Members enjoyed a convivial networking evening, enlivened by a Champagne Raffle, with over 20 prizes provided by over 20 our supplier supporters. Many thanks to Alfy Patel for organising the event, and to Rebecca Hubbard and her niece for energetic raffle sales.

49th Annual Dinner 2016

The London Section 49th Annual Dinner was held on 14th April 2016 at the Lancaster London Hotel, with over 250 guests from across the measurement and control industry attending to make it another memorable occasion. We had the pleasure of again welcoming Professor Sarah Spurgeon -P Institute President, to our top table.

Our President presented the London Section Prize for an Outstanding Contribution to Instrumentation Engineering to Mr David Otterson for his leading role in the creation of the of the “Tech Talk” series of basic real world application techniques in measurement and control. His work and commitment to the Institute were also acknowledged : Institute Vice President, Member of Board of Trustees, Member of Communications Board, Member of Professional Registration Committee.


The raffle was generously supported by all guests, the proceeds going to support the work of the Institute

As in previous years the London section took the opportunity to honour students from  sponsored universities. These students were presented awards all of whom have outstanding achievements in their particular Measurement and Control subjects.

48th Annual Dinner 
The London section 48th Annual Dinner was held on 16th April 2015 at the Lancaster London Hotel, with over 300 guests from across the measurement and control industry attending to make it another memorable occasion. We had the pleasure of welcoming Professor Sarah Spurgeon -President of the Institute, to our top table.

As in previous years we took the opportunity to honour students from our sponsored universities. These students were presented awards for their outstanding achievements in their particular subjects.

Our President presented the London Section Prize for an Outstanding Contribution to Instrumentation Engineering to Ron BellOBE, BSc, CEng, FIET for his leading role in the development of the international standards for integrity of Design and Installation of Safety Instrumented Systems.

16th Anniversary Annual London / Herts Local Sections Golf Challenge 22nd September 2017


15th Anniversary Annual London / Herts Local Sections Golf Challenge 9th September 2016

The 15th Anniversary of this very popular local sections event was held this year at Redbourn Golf Club Redbourn, Hertfordshire on the 9th September and proved to be another very successful event.

16 teams and 64 players participated in a shotgun start occupying the entire golf course.

Overall individual winner with 39 stableford points and the winner of a handsome trophy and a set of golf clubs was 15 year veteran organiser Steve Evans playing on the Valve Solutions team. Second was Jonathan Martin also playing on the Valve Solutions team with 37 stableford points beating Adrain Maelzer on the Eaton Valves team into third place on countback.

The winning team was Valve Solutions with 95 points.  Joint second were Eaton Valves and GE OIL and Gas with 89 points, followed by Yokogawa NLS in third with 86 points.
